DETROIT, Mich. – Brooks Kushman Senior Attorney Tim Clise and Of Counsel David C. Berry are scheduled to present on panels for small businesses during the 2017 Detroit Start-Up Week (DSW). The week-long event celebrates the large community of entrepreneurs and small businesses in Detroit and provides educational workshops on a variety of subjects, including a range of legal topics, civic innovation, place-based entrepreneurship, mobility and more. Berry will be with the Small Business Legal Academy (SBLA) on a panel discussing intellectual property, and Clise will moderate a panel called “So You Want to Build an App?,” about how entrepreneurs can successfully turn their ideas into a working product.
The SBLA presentation that Berry will be attending is a multi-panel presentation on practical legal and professional information for new business owners and entrepreneurs. It will be held on Saturday, May 20, 9:00 am-12:30 pm, at Wayne State University’s Undergrad Library Lecture Hall. The presentation will be followed by audience questions and discussions. The topics covered will be intellectual property, employment, real property and organizational basics and funding.
“So You Want to Build an App?” will explore how entrepreneurs can successfully work with software developers to turn their ideas into a functioning app. The panel will consist of top software developers, and Clise will be moderating. The panel will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 10:00 am – 11:00, at the #ChaseBasecamp 6A at the Masonic Temple.
Berry is a registered patent attorney with over 25 years of intellectual property experience, focusing on a variety of IP matters including patents, license agreements, litigation and trade secrets. He represents clients ranging from Fortune 100 companies to smaller privately-held companies. David is the Chair of the State Bar of Michigan Intellectual Property Law Section, on the board of directors for the Pro Bono Advisory Council, and is an adjunct professor for Wayne State University Law School’s Patent Procurement Clinic.
Clise`s practice focuses on U.S. and international patent preparation and prosecution in the electrical, mechanical and electromechanical arts, and computers and computer software. DSW is a free public event, and this year has partnered with Detroit Entrepreneur Week to expand their reach in the community. The event will take place beyond downtown and will be held at multiple locations throughout Detroit, including the Masonic Temple, Techtown Detroit, the GEM Theater, and the Ford Resource and Engagement Center. DSW events will take place May 22-26, 2017 throughout the day and well into the night.
