Brooks Kushman Welcomes New Shareholder Jason Burnette and New Associate Kristen Chui

SOUTHFIELD, Michigan– Brooks Kushman is pleased to welcome its newest shareholder Jason Burnette and newest associate Kristen Chui to our growing team.  Burnette will not only join our bench of experienced mechanical engineers, but his extensive in-house counsel experience will add significant depth to our team and to our clients. Chui will be joining our experienced trademark team with her extensive trademark and licensing experience.

In his role, Burnette will focus his practice on preparing and prosecuting patent applications in electrical and mechanical engineering as well as the computer science and aesthetic design arena. He counsels clients across a wide range of industries including automotive, consumer electronics, telecommunications, and medical devices. He also has experience counseling clients on freedom-to-operate opinions, IP due diligence, and trademarks.

Prior to joining Brooks Kushman, Burnette served as in-house counsel for a Fortune 500 multinational manufacturer of home appliances where he developed and managed all aspects of their global IP protection strategy for multiple business units. Burnette also brings years of automotive engineering experience to his practice. Burnette earned his Juris Doctor from the University of New Hampshire School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce Law Center) and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in Indianapolis. He is admitted to the State Bar of Michigan and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Chui’s practice is focused on all aspects of trademark and copyright law, including trademark clearance, prosecution, dispute resolution, enforcement, and intellectual property portfolio management. She works extensively with legal, marketing, and business development teams to devise cost-effective global brand protection strategies. She has drafted and negotiated agreements involving trademark and copyright issues, including the use of trademarks and third-party IP in marketing copy and in mobile apps. Kristen also has experience in licensing practices, including recording of the full chain of title of licensing and sublicensing agreements in various foreign jurisdictions.

Prior to joining Brooks Kushman, Chui served as Associate Counsel for Intellectual Property at a major technology company where she managed global trademark and copyright portfolios, procurement and enforcement efforts, licensing agreements, and general intellectual property related transactions. Chui’s prior experience also includes serving as in-house counsel at a leading oil and gas company as well working as a technical consultant on an HBO television series during law school. Chui earned her Juris Doctorate from UCLA School of Law and has two undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Communication from the University of California, Davis.
