David Berry Receives Michigan State Bar Excellence in IP Award

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. –Brooks Kushman is pleased to announce that attorney David Berry was recently honored by the State Bar of Michigan Intellectual Property Law Section with the 2018 State Bar of Michigan IP Section Excellence in Intellectual Property Award. This award is given to a single individual each year who has made substantial contributions to the Michigan IP community. Berry was nominated for the award by the IP Law Section Council and is only the fourth recipient of the honor. Berry was given the award by IP Law Section Chair Hope Shovein, a shareholder at Brooks Kushman, at a luncheon during the 44th Annual Intellectual Property Law Institute at the Dearborn Inn on October 25, 2018.

The Award recognizes Berry’s contributions over 18 years of experience as a practicing IP attorney and 15 years of experience as a law professor. He has had first-chair responsibility in patent jury and bench trials and appeals. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court,  the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First and Federal Circuits, and U.S. District Courts in Michigan and Massachusetts. David is also a registered patent attorney and is authorized to practice before the U.S. Patent Office.

Berry is an Adjunct Professor at Wayne State University Law School and is the Director of Wayne Law’s Patent Procurement Clinic, a USPTO-certified patent clinical program approved for student practice that provides patent legal services to low-income inventors in the Metro Detroit area. He is also Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Western Michigan University (WMU) - Cooley Law School, where he co-founded the WMU Graduate Program in Intellectual Property Law. He also is the principal instructor for Patent Resources Group’s national Patent Bar Review course, which prepares hundreds of practitioners each year to pass the USPTO’s registration examination.

David is a past chair of the State Bar of Michigan, Intellectual Property Law Section. He is a Founding Master of the Michigan Intellectual Property American Inn of Court, part of the Linn Inn Alliance, and chairs the Steering Committee of the Michigan Patent Pro Bono Project, a regional pro bono resource created pursuant to the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act. He also received INTA’s Volunteer Service Award in 2010.
