Dan’s goal is to understand the business needs and problems of his clients to best determine how to utilize intellectual property to address those needs.
Dan Hegner focuses his practice preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the electrical and mechanical arts as well as in the computer science arena. He counsels clients across a wide range of industries including automotive safety systems and auxiliary systems, connected vehicles, fluid systems, optical systems, consumer electronics, telecommunications, bottling and manufacturing, and medical devices.

Dan also assists business leaders in acquiring and otherwise leveraging their intellectual property portfolios. He also has experience counseling clients on freedom-to-operate opinions, IP due diligence, and trademarks.
Prior to joining Brooks Kushman, Dan served as an attorney with Bejin Beineman in Southfield, MI. He also spent 7 years as an electrical engineer at General Dynamics Land Systems. In that role, he served as a sights and electro-optical sensors engineer developing and integrating subsystems for the M1A1/M1A2 Main Battle Tank, the Stryker family of vehicles, and the Future Combat Systems (FCS) Mounted Combat System (MCS) vehicle.
Dan earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Detroit Mercy. He is admitted to the State Bar of Michigan, United States Patent & Trademark Office, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He is also a member of the Michigan Intellectual Property Inn of Court and currently serves on the Board of Managers for the Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association.
Outside of the office, Dan embraces community service. He is a Den Leader for his local Boy Scouts of America pack, he has coached FIRST Robotics (Lego League), and served as a race organizer and aid station captain of the Stony Creek Back to the Beach Half Marathon.
