Corey focuses his practice on the preparation and prosecution of domestic patent applications in the mechanical arts, providing freedom-to-operate opinions as well as aspects of licensing and contract negotiation. Due to his experience working in-house for a privately-held Fortune 1000 company, he understands the business aspects and the commercial realities of intellectual property and how it affects his clients’ goals. Starting his career at Brooks Kushman in the firm’s patent searching department, Corey searched for prior art used in patent prosecution, clearance opinions and patent validity studies. He has extensive experience providing data to clients that strengthens their position in determining whether to patent an inventive concept. He also helps clients determine whether they have freedom to operate and the state of the art in a specific market. Corey leverages his searching and engineering background to evaluate risk and recommend appropriate cost-effective steps when questions of freedom-to-operate arise. Prior to joining Brooks Kushman, Corey was an engineer at an automotive supplier and the lead technical interface for a Detroit-based OEM. He now uses his technical knowledge and experience as an engineer to successfully navigate the internal pressures clients face at their companies to allocate resources and develop creative solutions to complex problems. Corey holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering University and a Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University, where he served as Vice President of the Student Intellectual Property Law Association and as a student editor for the Michigan International Lawyer. He is currently a Young Leader in the Detroit Economic Club and works with the organization’s Career Readiness Academy as captain of a team that mentors a group of Metro-Detroit high school students.
