SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Brooks Kushman Associate Richard Leach was featured in EE Times’ April 18, 2016 article, “Open Source: Licensing Pitfalls May Outweigh Benefits.”

The article discusses the potential pitfalls of using open source software without carefully considering the licenses involved. There are thousands of open-source licenses in use, but the vast majority use one of five main licenses. In some cases, these licenses can be incompatible with each other, which can lead to conflicts with business objectives.

Leach recommends a three-step approach for companies to protect themselves while using open-source software, including developing an open-source strategy and company policy, educating developers and ensuring product software complies with relevant open-source licenses.

Leach is a member of Brooks Kushman’s open source software compliance practice, where he advises companies on becoming compliant with open source license agreements. His practice also includes the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the electrical and mechanical arts.
