Brooks Kushman Attorney to Speak on Panel at Detroit Association of Realtors Luncheon


SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Detroit Association of Realtors (“DAR”) is hosting a luncheon to honor both the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, also known as the Fair Housing Act. At the luncheon, the DAR will be honoring an individual with the Unsung Hero Award and hosting panel discussions regarding the history and application of the Fair Housing Act.

As a panelist, Brooks Kushman attorney Alan Gocha will be answering questions about the federal Fair Housing Act and discussing his current case, Davis v. Echo Valley Condominium Association, which is pending before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Gocha, along with co-counsel Justin Barry, are providing pro bono representation to a breast cancer survivor with asthma, who is suing her condominium association in an effort to enforce her right to clean air and right to breathe.

Gocha’s practice is primarily focused on complex intellectual property litigation in electrical, mechanical and software matters, however his experience touches a broad range of practice areas, including employment, civil rights, corporations, nonprofit, and bankruptcy law.  He also has experience in both defending and asserting copyright, trademark, and patent rights, and has represented a wide range of clients, from small businesses and individuals to Fortune 100 companies. Gocha has served as counsel in a number of cases, both in state and federal court, and also has experience in appellate advocacy and arbitration. As an attorney, Gocha has provided hundreds of hours of pro bono legal services.

Gocha has published several law review articles, including most recently: (1) “Avoiding the Rabbit Hole: An Ontological Model for Determining Section 101 Patent-Eligibility under Alice,” The John Marshall Review Intellectual Property Law, Volume 17, Issue 2, 2017, and (2) “A Modern System for Resolving Online Copyright Infringement Disputes: Administrative Rulemaking and Adjudication, a one-stop fix to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act,” The Journal of the Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property, Volume 58, Issue 2, 2018.

In addition to being cited in the American Bar Association’s Diversity and Inclusion 360 Commission Toolkit, Gocha has made several media appearances, including being featured on the Emmy Award-winning talk show The Doctors.
