SOUTHFIELD, Mich., – Brooks Kushman P.C. is pleased to announce that shareholder Michael MacCallum has been named a 2018 “Up & Coming Lawyer” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.  This award recognizes 30 honorees in Michigan’s legal community who are establishing a name for themselves, go above and beyond and display the ambition, drive, determination and accomplishments that set them apart among their peers — within their first 10 years in practice.

Michigan Lawyers Weekly will recognize the 2018 Up & Coming Lawyers at its tenth annual awards luncheon on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the Detroit Marriott in Troy, Michigan. MacCallum was recognized as a 2018 Up & Coming Lawyer for his leadership within the legal community, and his commitment to client service and educating the next generation of patent attorneys. As a part of his work in the legal and local community, MacCallum donates his time as an adjunct professor for the Patent Procurement Clinic at Wayne State University, where he creates the program curriculum, trains volunteers, mentors legal students, and provides pro bono intellectual property legal assistance to low-income inventors in the Metro Detroit area. Due to his early efforts to work with the WSU Patent Clinic, Brooks Kushman is the only law firm partner of the Patent Procurement Clinic.

MacCallum is a registered patent attorney and has nearly a decade of patent prosecution and litigation experience, as well as experience with post-grant proceedings. Prior to becoming a patent attorney, he worked as an engineer for an automotive OEM in the hydraulic brake system unit. As an attorney, he manages intellectual property portfolios for clients ranging from Fortune 100 Corporations to independent inventors. MacCallum is experienced in all phases of patent procurement, from working directly with inventors to craft invention disclosures, to drafting and prosecuting patent applications, and successfully appealing applications with the Patent Trials and Appeals Board.

MacCallum has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University, and a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School, where he graduated cum laude. MacCallum is based in Brooks Kushman’s Southfield, Michigan office.
