SOUTHFIELD, MichiganAmerican Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) published an article in the Quarterly Journal in September 2022, co-authored by Brooks Kushman attorney Reza Roghani Esfahani and Professor Howard Bromberg.

In his article, “Marijuana and Patents: The Complicated Relationship Between Patent Rights and the Federal Criminalization of Marijuana,” Esfahani and Bromberg discuss the difficult questions that arise in the context of marijuana-related inventions, patent procurement, and patent enforcement. These questions are a subset of the contradictions in the law of marijuana, where the federal government prohibits marijuana use and yet many of the states legalize, regulate, and tax it.

Reza Esfahani is an intellectual property attorney, with a focus on patent and trade secret litigation involving a wide range of technologies including mechanical, chemical, and computer sciences. While pursuing his engineering degrees, he worked on projects directed at breast cancer therapy, live cell delivery, and the development of small molecule inhibitors of a human protein implicated in thrombosis. Reza also has experience working on projects directed toward the investigation of the aggregation kinetics of crude oil components.
