SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Brooks Kushman attorneys Tiffany Fidler and Michael Turner are presenting a workshop called “Design Drives Detroit” at the upcoming United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Design Day 2019. Their session will be an open discussion of practical implementations of recent design patent law issues relevant to area industries, ranging from automotive to consumer products. The discussion will also coordinate business, design and legal strategies to optimize an intellectual property owner’s competitive position in the market including replacement parts. Fidler and Turner will discuss coordinating design patent strategies within the IP portfolio, including utility patents and trade dress, as well. The event is cohosted by the AIPLA, AIPPI, the IP Law Section of the American Bar Association (ABA-IPL), the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO), INTA, and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), and the USPTO.
Fidler’s practice centers on procuring domestic and foreign patents in mechanical and electromechanical matters, and coordinating international patent portfolios. She has experience representing clients ranging from Fortune 100 companies to start-ups, and protecting intellectual property rights in automotive technologies, aviation technologies, alternative energy, optics, and consumer products including personal care products, among others.
Fidler received her doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan with a focus in the thermal fluid sciences and an interdisciplinary thesis in combustion and materials science. Tiffany’s interdisciplinary background, as well as her experiences and successes in the scientific and academic communities, enable her to build relationships and connect with inventors to understand and protect advanced and emerging technologies.
Turner focuses his practice on domestic and foreign patent prosecution for mechanical matters, electromechanical matters, systems, business methods, and designs. His industry background in robotics and automation provides him with experience in various technologies and manufacturing processes, which he utilizes to protect his client`s intellectual property rights. Turner also counsels clients on procedures for filing domestic patent applications that meet the varying requirements for both domestic and international protection, particularly addressing the various international nuances associated with design patents.
Turner is actively involved in post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and represents clients in inter partes review proceedings, and reexaminations. Such involvement includes coordinating strategies across post-grant proceedings, co-pending litigation, product engineering, licensing, and patent prosecution.
