Brooks Kushman President Featured in Crain’s Detroit Business

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Brooks Kushman President Mark Cantor was featured in Crain’s Detroit Business’ Dec. 7 article, “Tech transfer office can help a professor turn intellectual gifts into gold.” The article is included in Crain’s bi-annual “Michigan Deal” publication.

In the article, Cantor discusses legal considerations regarding the ownership of intellectual property in technology transfers, as well as best practices to avoid pitfalls when transferring university research and innovations to for-profit companies. These tech transfers help universities fund graduate programs, while developing innovative products for the market.

“Historically, the reason the universities (wanted to help researchers commercialize) is because they didn’t feel they were leveraging their intellectual capital as well as they should,” Cantor said in the article. “Universities used to do a lot of work and a lot of research but didn’t know how to monetize it.”

Cantor is one of the founders of Brooks Kushman, and has been instrumental in the firm’s growth. He is co-chair of the Brooks Kushman litigation practice, focusing on complex litigation matters in all technology areas in his practice.
