SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Brooks Kushman attorneys Erin Bowles and Isheeta Patel are presenting a workshop called “Intellectual Property 101: A Roadmap to IP Protection” in partnership with MichBio, an organization that works to promote the growth of the bio industry in Michigan by being a source for information, advocacy and resources.

The presentation will focus on intellectual property basics for entrepreneurs and start ups and is meant to lay the groundwork for future MichBio workshops that will delve deeper into different aspects of obtaining and protecting intellectual property rights.

Bowles is a shareholder at Brooks Kushman and focuses her practice on counseling clients on their intellectual property portfolios, with a focus on obtaining domestic and foreign patents and handling patent prosecution procedures. She worked as an engineer for nearly a decade before starting her career in law, and uses her industry experience and technical expertise to inform her expansive understanding of a broad range of technologies such as solar power, plastic injection molding, and complex automotive sensors and control systems. Bowles is committed to promoting STEM initiatives for young women, and regularly volunteers with the Girl Scouts of Southeast Michigan to help Girl Scouts earn their IP patch.

Patel is a registered patent attorney and focuses her practice on the preparation and prosecution of domestic patent applications in the chemical engineering and materials arts. She also counsels clients on their patent portfolios and assists in making business strategic decisions involving intellectual property. Isheeta is active in promoting diversity in the legal profession. Outside of Brooks Kushman, she is President of the South Asian Bar Association (SABA) of Michigan and is currently serving on the Board of Director’s for SABA North America.
