For over 30 years, Brooks Kushman has built a reputation as a cutting-edge intellectual property law firm. Our team of highly dedicated attorneys and professional staff uphold this reputation through their active involvement in the Detroit and Los Angeles communities.

At Brooks Kushman, we offer a fast-paced, challenging, and collegial work environment that provides each attorney the ability to advance their own career. At Brooks Kushman, we do not evaluate, promote, or compensate attorneys on a rigid, uniform basis. Rather, progress is determined by each lawyer’s demonstrated ability to take on additional responsibilities. New associates will have significant client contact from the earliest stages of their careers. Attorneys can be considered as potential Shareholders at Brooks Kushman after practicing for as little as seven years.

We recognize that the vitality of our firm lies in our ability to continue to recruit and retain high caliber intellectual property professionals, and we are always seeking talented professionals to join our growing practice.

Brooks Kushman is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, veteran status, marital status, sexual orientation, disability or any other category prohibited by applicable local, state or federal law.

We do not set limits on the development of our employees – taking great pride in creating opportunities for our professionals at all levels to advance their careers and team building activities. Throughout the year, we create several opportunities to socialize outside of the office. This not only allows everyone to maintain rapport, but also provides opportunities for communication and collaboration outside of the office environment.

Our firm also plans events for employees to volunteer within the community each quarter. These events not only improve our community, but bring everyone together to work as a team.

Compensation & Benefits

Brooks Kushman offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. Starting salaries for our associates are comparable to other large law firms. Early in their career at Brooks Kushman, by the mutual agreement of the lawyer and the firm, associates can forego a salary for a percentage of their billings.

In addition to our generous compensation plan, we offer the following benefits:

  • Health Insurance with available vision and dental plans
  • Short-term and Long-term Disability Insurance
  • Life, Death and Accidental Dismemberment Insurance
  • 401K and profit sharing with matching funds that may exceed an employee’s contribution
  • Flexible Spending Account

Other Compensation

Along with our compensation and benefit plans, Brooks Kushman offers attorneys a personal business expense fund to use at their discretion. This fund can cover expenses related to business development, individual training, continuing legal education and client development. The firm also pays for our lawyers’ memberships to mandatory bar associations and covers the cost of bar review preparation courses and bar exams.

Professional Development

In any organization, the most crucial resource is its people. We believe that in order to be a premier legal service provider, and the go-to firm for our clients, we must invest in the development of that resource.

Mentoring

At Brooks Kushman, we take every step to ensure that new attorneys feel confident in their new role and receive the resources they need to succeed. We have a multi-disciplinary approach that includes every practice and professional area at the firm. We take immense pride in providing a collaborative culture for our attorneys.

We pair lateral attorneys with mentors that share a similar background and experience. This ensures that we are giving laterals the support they need to thrive within our culture. We also provide attorneys with a variety of online subscriptions and training modules for CLE and professional development.

Training

Training and the development of all employees is the cornerstone of our practice. The professional development of our team drives the success of our firm and allows us to provide the quality service our clients have come to expect and appreciate.

Our Practice Group Chairs facilitate this training program. Each department’s specific training modules ensure new attorneys gain the proper training and receive the necessary tools to provide high quality legal services to clients. We recognize that every candidate is unique and requires a different approach when joining a new firm. Because of this, our senior shareholders are essential to this process. We include additional shareholders into our training efforts early in the process to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

Our firm has also created the BK Boot Kamp™ to develop formalized training classes, specifically tailored to patent prosecution and intellectual property litigation. We place associates into the BK Boot Kamp™ as soon as they join the firm and they remain in the class until they have established a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. We created these sessions to ensure that our new attorneys gain the proper training and receive the necessary tools to provide high quality legal services to our clients.

The firm also offers internal educational programs to discuss new issues, procedures, or rulings that impact our work and our clients. Lastly, as part of our continuing legal education policy, Brooks Kushman has several subscriptions to legal educational programs.

We strive to create a culture that focuses on the development of all employees and provides the necessary tools to fulfill their professional development and career goals.  Our efforts focus on best practices in client service, cross-selling, networking, and teamwork. Our goal is to create a culture that educates professionals on critical skills our attorneys and staff will need to generate new business, develop stronger professional relationships, and best serve our clients.

Laterals

We believe that adding lateral attorneys to our team benefits our firm in a variety of ways, including introducing innovative technology and career development opportunities, increasing the firm’s diversity and inclusion, and further increasing client satisfaction.
