Southfield, Mich. – (October 12, 2016) – Brooks Kushman is pleased to announce the firm has expanded to Washington, D.C., opening its third office with the addition of Lissi Mojica. The new office is located within walking distance of the Unites States Patent and Trademark Office.

The new office will be led by renowned IP professional Mojica, who will serve as a principal and will play a vital role in expanding the firm in the greater-Washington D.C. area. Prior to joining Brooks Kushman, Mojica was a principal with multinational law firm Dentons’ IP and technology practice group, focusing on post-grant proceedings.

“Over the past two years, I have had the pleasure of working on more than 25 inter partes review filings with the team at Brooks Kushman,” said Mojica. “They bring a level of experience that you do not see from many other IP firms. I am looking forward to joining this group of experienced and knowledgeable attorneys to start the next chapter in my career.”

Mojica brings extensive IP experience to Brooks Kushman, having served in various examination and supervisory positions with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for 19 years. During her time at the USPTO, she was responsible for the creation of the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) to ensure quality and consistency of reexamination proceedings.

“Lissi has played an integral role in the development of modern patent law, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Brooks Kushman team,” said Brooks Kushman President Mark Cantor. “I am confident she will serve as a strong leader as we expand our firm to the Washington, D.C. market, and will bring a valuable new perspective to our clients around the country.”

As the CRU’s first director, Mojica played an integral role in the adoptions of the current post-grant review system, enacted as part of the America Invents Act. Her practice focuses on all aspects of post-grant proceedings, including preparing, analyzing and prosecuting inter partes reviews, post-grant reviews, covered business method proceedings, reexamination proceedings, reissues and interferences.

Mojica is an active member of the Intellectual Property Owner’s Association, the  American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Intellectual Property Owners Association and Chair of the PTAB Appeals Committee in the newly formed PTAB Bar Association..
