SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Brooks Kushman, in partnership with Michigan State University (MSU), hosted a Chinese Delegation for a roundtable discussion on Friday, September 7, 2018, in Southfield, Michigan. The roundtable focused on recent developments with U.S. patent challenges and trade secrets. It was moderated by Brooks Kushman shareholder Kristin L. Murphy, and shareholders John LeRoy, Marc Lorelli, and Linda Mettes presented. Murphy and Mettes are also both current MSU patent litigation professors.

Lorelli and Mettes discussed the recent developments with U.S. patent challenges and focused on litigation, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and the International Trade Commission (ITC). LeRoy presented on trade secret strategies.

The Chinese delegates are visiting the United States through the MSU Visiting International Professionals Program (VIPP). VIPP offers short-term workshops for international professionals and connects them with experts in multiple fields within and outside the MSU community. Each delegate is a senior professional who works for a state-owned enterprise in China, and their industries of focus vary. The participants hold different roles but are all involved in the legal and economic leadership of the enterprise that they work for. The visiting delegation is focused on learning about intellectual property, anti-trust laws, and litigation procedures. They are also interested in learning more about the background, application, and challenges of the law and its principles in the U.S.
