SOUTHFIELD, Mich., – Brooks Kushman Shareholder William Abbatt was recently elected president of the Michigan Intellectual Property Inn of Court, a philanthropic organization of judges, attorneys, legal educators and law students created to promote excellency in advocacy. Patterned after the English Inns of Court mentoring system, the Michigan Inn offers educational programs written and presented by its one hundred plus members. With the help of Committee Chairs, Abbatt will oversee such activities as membership operations, finances, programming, media and communications and academic liaison. He plans to ensure the organization stays true to its original mission: to teach by example junior lawyers and law students how to advocate zealously yet ethically for their clients. Outreach initiatives directed to fledgling entrepreneurs are planned. Abbatt will coordinate with Judge David Lawson who serves as liaison between the Inn and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Abbatt is a founding member of the Michigan Intellectual Property Inn, which was created five years ago. He is enthusiastic about moving into this position of leadership: “As president of this Inn, I have an opportunity to give back to the profession which has treated me so well.”

With over 30 years of experience as a patent attorney, Abbatt’s practice covers all aspects of domestic and foreign patent preparation and prosecution, opinions and intellectual property (IP)-related due diligence investigations, plus litigation and related client counselling. He has experience with various technologies and industries, including aeronautics, automotive, medical devices, computer software, and consumer products.
