SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Midwest Regional Office of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) invited families of the Metro Detroit community to participate in All About STEM!, an event hosted at the Detroit Public Library that focused on promoting activities and information surrounding science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. This included a maker space, a session with experts from the USPTO who shared how people can protect their ideas, and a session with experts who provided information and answered general questions about programs to support local entrepreneurship and innovation. Brooks Kushman attorneys Jennifer Ziegler and Rebecca Cantor participated in the program, in partnership with the Unreal Campaign, an International Trademark Association (INTA) committee which educates teens about trademarks and counterfeit goods. Several pairs of genuine and counterfeit goods were displayed as a part of Ziegler’s and Cantor’s presentation so that they could talk about counterfeit goods in a hands-on way.

With nearly 20 years of combined experience as in-house and outside counsel practicing in the areas of trademark and copyright law, Ziegler’s practice focuses on global brand protection, trademark and copyright enforcement, anti-counterfeiting, and trademark portfolio management. She also works with her clients on issues involving anti-counterfeiting, copyright, domain name recovery, IP due diligence, licensing, trade dress, and unfair competition. Ziegler has extensive experience working with clients of all sizes in a variety of industries, including automotive, consumer products, entertainment, bio-tech and life sciences, and financial services.

Ziegler also serves as a volunteer mediator for The Dispute Resolution Center, a community mediation center serving Washtenaw and Livingston counties, where she has mediated over 50 legal disputes. Her training and experience as a mediator has given her particular expertise in conflict resolution.

Cantor’s practice concentrates on intellectual property litigation, with a focus on patent litigation involving a wide range of technologies including pharmaceuticals and other life sciences technologies. Rebecca also has experience in trademark disputes, both in Federal Court and in the USPTO. In addition, Rebecca counsels clients in developing strategies to protect their intellectual property .

Prior to joining Brooks Kushman, Rebecca was a patent litigator at Vinson & Elkins LLP in New York. While there, Rebecca participated in a number of patent infringement cases which primarily involved technologies related to life sciences.
