SOUTHFIELD, Michigan– Brooks Kushman is delighted to announce that CEO Sangeeta Shah and Chief Diversity Officer Chanille Carswell were selected for this year’s class of the Notable Women in Law by Crain’s Detroit Business.

The women featured in the Notable Women in Law report are selected based on their career accomplishments, track record of success in the field, contributions to their community, and mentorship of others. They’ve set legal precedents, relentlessly pursued justice and won big cases for their clients – all while mentoring the next wave of women in law and finding ways to give back.

Sangeeta Shah is the CEO of Brooks Kushman, responsible for leading the firm’s Executive Committee. In addition to serving as the CEO, Sangeeta maintains an active docket as an IP practitioner with over 20 years of experience in managing patent portfolios, PTAB matters, patent litigation, and opinions.  Sangeeta works closely with several Fortune 500 clients for whom she provides strategic counseling and guidance on global intellectual property portfolios. Her patent expertise has resulted in national recognition from Managing IP, Best Lawyers, IAM, AIPLA, and the PTAB Bar Association.

Prior to becoming CEO, Sangeeta served as the firm’s Chief Diversity Officer. In that position, she developed and implemented a range of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within and outside of the firm through outreach programs and partnerships. Under her leadership, the firm was recognized in 2018 and 2019 by ChIPs and Diversity Lab as a national Honor Roll Firm for its dedication to advancing diversity and inclusion. Sangeeta also hosts the Breaking Mindsets Podcast where she interviews leaders who defy expectations and have accomplished great change in their field.

Chanille Carswell is Co-Chair of Litigation at the firm and has over 20 years of litigation experience across the country. She focuses her practice on trademark, trade dress, copyright, and patent litigation. She also represents prominent brands in the enforcement of their IP assets in District Courts, as well as opposition and cancellation proceedings before the TTAB. Carswell’s experience also includes trademark counseling, clearance, protection, enforcement, and the management of the domestic and foreign trademark portfolios of Fortune 500 companies.

Carswell also serves as the firm’s Chief Diversity Officer. She is active in the legal community and is dedicated to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) both within Brooks Kushman and the greater legal community. As a part of these efforts, she facilitates the firm’s participation in the Wolverine Bar Association’s Summer Clerkship Program, and she was a 2015 Fellow within the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD). Carswell is also the Membership Chair for the Michigan Intellectual Property Inn of Court. Carswell is passionate about giving back to her community and prioritizes civic engagement activities to improve her local community. She is a regular supporter of Alternatives for Girls, a nonprofit organization that serves homeless and at-risk girls and women in her hometown, Detroit.
