SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Brooks Kushman shareholder Michael Turner will be speaking at the Tennessee Intellectual Property Law Association (TIPLA) Fall Symposium in Nashville on November 1, 2019. TIPLA sponsors two symposiums a year for patent attorneys, patent agents, trademark attorneys, and copyright attorneys to discuss IP law in Tennessee.

Turner’s presentation called, “Automotive Industrial Designs: The Intersection of Patents and Trademarks,” will discuss contemporary issues related to design patents with a focus on the recent decision of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Automotive Body Parts Association v. Ford Global Technologies, LLC, (2019). This presentation will evaluate design patents with other intellectual properties, including trademarks, and utility patents.  Turner will discuss the role of design patents in the automotive industry and replacement parts, and other industries. He will also discuss coordinating design strategies to employ the various IP protections to protect industrial designs.

Turner focuses his practice on domestic and foreign patent prosecution for mechanical matters, electromechanical matters, systems, business methods, and designs. His industry background in robotics and automation provides him with experience in various technologies and manufacturing processes, which he utilizes to protect his client’s intellectual property rights. Turner also counsels clients on procedures for filing domestic patent applications that meet the varying requirements for both domestic and international protection, particularly addressing the various international nuances associated with design patents.

Turner is actively involved in post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and represents clients in inter partes review proceedings, and reexaminations. Such involvement includes coordinating strategies across post-grant proceedings, co-pending litigation, product engineering, licensing, and patent prosecution.
