SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) is hosting their fourth annual Marijuana Law Conference. Presented by the Marijuana Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, this conference is for both experienced and new law practitioners of marijuana law.

Brooks Kushman shareholders Erin Bowles and Robyn Lederman will be speaking together at the conference on Friday, October 25, 2019 at 3:30 PM at the JW Marriott in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Bowles and Lederman’s presentation called “Marijuana and IP: Don’t Let Your IP Assets Go Up in Smoke!” will focus on how entrepreneurs can use an IP strategy to build a brand, monetize cannabis-related products, and maximize benefits while minimizing risk for a new product or invention in this booming industry.

Bowles’ practice involves counseling domestic and international clients from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies on their intellectual property portfolios, with a focus on obtaining domestic and foreign patents, and handling patent prosecution procedures. Her practice also includes patentability investigations, infringement and right-to-use analysis, and intellectual property transactions and licensing agreements, trademark, trade dress, and copyright issues. She also has an expansive understanding of various mechanical and electromechanical technologies. In particular, she has experience representing clients and protecting intellectual property rights in the alternative energy, medical device, automotive technology, optics and lighting, aviation technology, and personal care product industries, among others.

Lederman, Co-Chair of Trademarks at Brooks Kushman, has 25 years of trademark experience. She works closely with in-house counsel and entrepreneurs to create international brand strategies necessary to achieve marketing and business goals. Lederman began her practice at a large New York law firm in commercial litigation, followed by several years at a technology firm overseas, both of which give her a unique perspective on global trademark strategies and consulting. Her clients range in size, industry and technologies. She routinely handles the gamut of trademark issues, including availability assessments, registration, enforcement, domain name recovery, and brand protection.
